About my work

My background in fine art and textiles, combined with my interior design experience, has given me a very particular perspective.

I am spontaneous, working quickly and intuitively.

The shape of things is as important to me as the textured, layered surfaces I create.

I love the the mindful process of hand building, particularly using coils.  The shapes form quickly, and I like the random, imperfect and often quirky silhouette that this ancient practice achieves.

I also throw on the wheel and quite often combine both processes.

When it comes to decoration, I use a limited neutral palette. I tend to shy away from colour usually- but not always. It’s the soft, soothing, and muted tones of nature (especially the seaside) that bring me the most joy and that I am drawn to- my house and clothes too are all made up of the same palette: dark, inky indigo blue, creamy white and burnt sienna are repeated throughout.

I tend to layer, starting with washes of slips. Then I apply oxides and glazes; sometimes I rub back to the bare clay using tools.  At other  times I wash off the glaze, which leaves ghostly marks that create patina and a sense of history.

The magic for me is in creating a piece that is beautiful, useful - and as if it's been found; dug up.

Each piece speaks to me, and I try to listen. What I always aim to achieve is a piece that is honest, visually interesting, and unique.
